Detailed Itinerary

Palccoyo Mountain – The Scenic, Gentle Alternative

Day 1

Colors, Culture & Comfort

04:30 AM: Private Hotel Pickup

Your private driver and guide collect you from your Cusco hotel. Wrap yourself in the warm blankets provided in our vehicle and catch up on sleep as we drive through the awakening Andean countryside.

Morning: History at Checacupe

On our way, we make a fascinating stop at Checacupe to see three bridges from three different eras side-by-side: Inca (rope), Colonial (stone), and Republican (steel). It’s a quick but powerful lesson in Peruvian history.

Mid-Morning: The Gentle Hike at Palccoyo

We arrive at the trailhead (4,900m / 16,000 ft). Unlike Vinicunca, you step out of the car and are already surrounded by painted hills.

  • The Walk: A gentle 45-minute to 1-hour walk on a wide, mostly flat path.
  • The Views: Marvel at the red, ochre, and turquoise stripes of three separate mountains. You’ll also see herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely, with the snow-capped Ausangate mountain looming in the distance.
  • 0The Stone Forest: For a slightly better vantage point, take a short optional walk up to the Bosque de Piedras (Stone Forest), massive rock formations that look like petrified trees.

Afternoon: Lunch & Return

After ample time for photos and soaking in the silence (a rarity at popular sites), we return to the vehicle. We drive to the town of Cusipata for a comforting buffet lunch featuring local ingredients.

17:30 PM: Return to Cusco

Relax on the drive back, arriving at your hotel in Cusco in time for dinner.

What to bring
Recommendations
  • Acclimatization is Still Key: Even though the hike is flat, you are at 16,000 feet (4,900m). Do not attempt this on your first day. Spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first.
  • Dress in Layers: It can be freezing wind one moment and intense sun the next. Wear a thermal base layer, fleece, windbreaker/rain jacket, hat, gloves, and sunglasses.
  • Photography Tip: The colors of Palccoyo are often more vibrant than Vinicunca because you are closer to the sediment layers. Cloudy days actually help saturate the colors in photos!
  • ‍Best for Families: If you have children (8+) or older family members who want to see the Andes but can't do a strenuous trek, this is the #1 recommended tour.
Frequently asked questions

Clearing Your Doubts

How does this compare to Vinicunca (Classic Rainbow Mountain)?

Vinicunca is a steep, challenging hike with thousands of visitors daily. Palccoyo is a flat, easy walk with very few visitors. You see three rainbow mountains at Palccoyo vs. one at Vinicunca. Palccoyo is the "smart choice" for a relaxed experience.

Is it really "flat"?

Yes, compared to any other mountain trek in Peru, it is very flat. There is a slight incline, but nothing technical or steep. Most people find it very manageable if they are acclimatized.

What if I get altitude sickness?

Your private guide carries an oxygen tank at all times. Since it's a private tour, we can stop immediately, administer oxygen, and return to the vehicle if you don't feel well. You are never stuck on the mountain.

Are there bathrooms?

There are basic restrooms at the trailhead/parking area and better facilities at the restaurant where we stop for lunch.

Machu Picchu Tour

Date of experience:September 2025

The one-day tour to Machu Picchu is well organized and the scenic train is lovely. The guide was friendly and explained everything well during the visit. I felt the time inside Machu Picchu was a bit tight to take it all in calmly, but I understand there's a set time limit for visitors. Overall, it met my expectations.

Excellent service

Date of experience:September 2025

It was a refreshing experience to explore the history and landscapes over these four days — every destination, from Moray to Ollantaytambo, left us wanting to learn more. Machu Picchu was without a doubt the highlight, though at times it was quite crowded, which made it a little harder to enjoy peacefully — still, everything was made easy to manage. Totally worth it!

A different and relaxing experience🙂‍↕️

Date of experience:August 2025

We took the valley tour with an outdoor picnic and the views were stunning! The peacefulness of the place made everything feel so different and special! The only thing was that time flew by — we would have liked to stay a bit longer to enjoy the scenery in the evening light. Still, it was totally worth it and I'd recommend it for anyone looking for something different and peaceful near Cusco.

Great experience.

Date of experience:July 2025

The 5-day tour was really great overall. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the private city tour of Cusco was a great way to get oriented. Visiting Moray and Maras with the picnic was a unique experience, and seeing Machu Picchu was definitely a highlight. The full-day hike to Vinicunca was tough but rewarding, though I wish there had been a bit more time to rest afterward. Still, the trip was well organized and comfortable, and I would definitely recommend it.
